direct & indirect pelvic floor treatments
There are a lot of ways to work on the pelvic floor; some are direct and some are more indirect.
Hip mobility plays a huge role in pelvic floor mobility. Improving hip mobility improves pelvic muscle mobility. Foot and ankle mobility affect the hip which then affects the pelvic floor✨
People often clench their jaws when they’re stressed. Due to the relationship of the jaw and pelvic floor, this can create pelvic floor tension. Additionally, some people just clench their pelvic floor when stressed. Working on overall stress can help with both of these things. Some of my favorite techniques are diaphragmatic breathing, tapping, yoga, and talk therapy✨
When someone has decreased strength they have increased mobility and decreased stability in the joints of the surrounding area. The body’s response is to tighten the muscles in the area, leading to tension. By increasing the strength, you increase stability and decrease tension✨
This one is a little more obvious... When someone has pelvic tension, there are some great stretches for the pelvic floor. You can also stretch the muscles near/ around the pelvic floor. For instance the adductors (middle thigh muscles) attach to the pelvis NEAR the superficial pelvic floor muscles. Adductor stretching can be a game changer for people with pelvic pain✨
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve heard helps pelvic floor tension or pain?
