Lubricant Facts!
Numerous things can affect the bodily fluids during sexual activity; including but not limited to hormones, medications, foreplay, medical conditions, etc. Lubricant is great at assisting the body in reducing friction. Certain types are better for certain things. Think devices vs. condom use.
There are 3 basic types of lubricants...
💦Water based:
I like Slippery Stuff and Good Clean Love
Can be used with all devices or activities
Latex safe
Can slow sperm motility (be aware if trying to get pregnant)
Body absorbs quickly (may need to reapply)
Not great for shower sex
Not as friction resistant as other options so may not be the best for pelvic pain
💦Oil based:
Hello coconut oil (could also use grape seed, olive, or almond oils-sometimes coconut can be irritating)
Good for reducing friction! (and good for longer sessions or anal)
Can be very natural
Great for a bath or shower sesh
Can be easily used in a pinch if you run out of your other lubricants
Can stain sheets
Can break down latex (think condoms!)
💦Silicone based:
I like über lube
Great for reducing friction!!!
Works for a long time (good for longer sessions or anal)
Latex safe
Can NOT be used with silicone based devices (toys, wands, dilators, etc.)
✴️ Sometimes I have patients progress through the types of lubricants. For example, if someone comes to me for pelvic pain, they may start by using silicone or oil based and progress to water based, which is less friction resistant.
✴️ NEVER EVER EVER use edible lubricants because they often contain sugar which can cause yeast infections. Additionally, scented lubricants can have chemicals which make it smell good, but can be aggravating to tissues.
✴️ ALSO, there are lubricants with lidocaine which can help assist if you are having unwanted pain with intercourse. I like Desert Harvest🌵 because it’s CLEAN.
