3 Types of Constipation
Did you know there are three basic types of constipation? Review what constipation “technically” is here and check out how doctors classify stool here.
#1 Normal Transit Time (MOST COMMON)
This means the food moves through the digestive tract in a typical manner but then sits in the rectum for longer than it should. This is typically due to decreased sensation in the rectum or a stretched rectum (typically due to consistent constipation).
#2 Slow Transit Time
This is as it sounds; the food moves through the intestines slower. This can be due to decreased smooth muscle activity moving it through and can also be a rebound effect of using laxatives for extended periods of time. The longer the substances are in the large intestine, the more fluid is removed from the substance, resulting in harder stool.
#2 Dyssynergic Defecation (AKA mechanical pelvic floor dysfunction)
This means everything is typical until you get to the pelvic muscles. Then there is something happening at the outlet/sphincters, that isn’t allowing emptying. This could be due to tight muscles, uncoordinated posterior pelvic muscles, or a combo of both.
Any questions? Do you think you have any of these? All of these can be helped with pelvic PT! Call and schedule a free consultation with me to talk about if PT would help you.
