Do You Moo When You Poo?

Did you know the pelvic floor is literally connected to the jaw?

There is a fascial line running from the pelvic floor muscles to the jaw muscles. Because of this, I often see that if one is tight, the other is tight. And often, if we can get one area to settle down, the other will follow. They are highly connected and there’s research that shows that while people hum or talk with a low tone the pelvic floor muscles relax and lengthen and when speaking or singing at higher pitches, the pelvic floor contracts and lifts.

*Fun fact: the muscles of the pelvic floor and jaw also look very similar. The opening from the head to tail developed at the same time embryonically and the muscles of the pelvic floor and throat, mirror each other. Interestingly, this happens with many things in the body.*

I say all this because if you relax your jaw while going to the bathroom, you can help relax the pelvic floor muscles, in order to empty better. So what does this have to do with mooing? As you’re doing your “belly big, belly hard” with a Squatty Potty, instead of just exhaling… you can relax the jaw and MOO. This relaxes the pelvic floor and jaw muscles.

Ask my patients! I never make people moo WITH me but my coworkers have heard me mooing to and teaching my patients to “moo”. It really does help.
